A lower gastrointestinal health issue can make every day uncomfortable and difficult.
At Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates (HGA), we provide hope for symptom improvement and lasting relief.
These conditions are characterized by inflammation in the large and small intestinal walls. Symptoms may range from abdominal pain and diarrhea to loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea and unexplained weight loss.
IBS is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal condition. The most common signs of IBS include a change in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea or alternating between the two) and cramping in the lower abdomen.
Contaminated food or water can cause diarrhea that often resolves on its own. If you have persistent or severe symptoms, you should contact your doctor or our office immediately for care.
People with lactose intolerance have difficulty digesting lactose, the main sugar in milk and other dairy products, which may lead to cramps, diarrhea, and gas. Symptoms of lactose intolerance may be easily confused with other digestive problems. A gastroenterologist is the most qualified physician to diagnose and manage this treatable condition.
You can count on our expertise with state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment options for even the most challenging lower intestinal conditions.
Whether you need a blood test or a more advanced diagnostic procedure, HGA offers comprehensive testing to accurately diagnose lower gastrointestinal disorders. Our capabilities include advanced procedures not available anywhere else in our area, such as endoscopic ultrasound, used to examine and/or take biopsies of the intestines.
In this procedure, we have you swallow a capsule that encases a digital camera and transmits wireless data to a recording device you wear for several hours. When the images are downloaded, we can view the small intestine between the stomach and colon. This is an area that is difficult for us to examine by other means. It allows us to find obscure bleeding sites and tumors and to identify Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the small intestine).
Remicade is a drug that has been proven effective for reducing symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis for patients who have not achieved good results from oral medical therapy. In this in-office therapy we deliver Remicade by infusion through an IV. It can offer rapid relief of symptoms, in as little as two weeks, and put Crohn’s disease into remission.
