A unique perspective on gastroenterology…
The field of gastroenterology is unique in that it often spans beyond our own area of expertise. We often get referrals from multiple different specialists such as pulmonologists for chronic coughs, cardiologists for atypcial chest pain, psychiatrists for anxiety related GI symptoms, dermatologists for rashes related to possible underlying gastrointestinal disease, and so forth. This places us in a unique position as a gastroenterologist. We not only are able to provide our expertise in our field, but we are able to work with the patient and their other providers to create a comprehensive plan. Doing so properly requires that we take into account all underlying medical conditions and concerns a patient may have. This not only helps tailor our treatment to our patient’s needs, but also creates a good relationship between the patient and doctor. That is one of the main reasons I went into the field of medicine. My relationships with my patients help me understand them better, which as a result, helps me guide their treatment. I try to treat every patient as an individual and ensure that I address all of their individual concerns/questions. I truly believe that listening to a patient and showing empathy allows a patient to open up and share information that they may not have felt comfortable discussing in the first place (especially when its related to their gastrointestinal issues!).
