Sweater weather and football season are back! 🙌
And with them comes everyone’s favorite season of eating: pumpkin bread, apple cider, Halloween candy, and the holiday meals right around the corner.
It’s a fun time of year, but it’s also when a lot of people start noticing that familiar tight, full, uncomfortable feeling after meals.
So this fall, we’re starting with something that many people experience but rarely think twice about.
Let’s Talk About Bloating
Bloating is one of the most common digestive complaints, yet the majority of people never mention it to a doctor.
While it’s usually your digestive system working through something and not a sign of anything serious, knowing the difference can help you decide when to wait it out… and when to get it checked.
The Usual Suspects
Most bloating comes down to everyday causes like:
- Eating quickly or swallowing air while you eat and drink
- Gas-producing foods, like beans, broccoli, and carbonated drinks
- Constipation
- Trouble digesting certain foods, like lactose
- Larger-than-usual meals, which the holiday season is full of
- Ongoing conditions like GERD or IBS
When to Pay Closer Attention
Bloating that comes and goes is common. But it’s worth getting checked if it’s paired with:
- Bloating that lasts more than a couple of weeks or keeps getting worse
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blood in your stool or dark, tarry stools
- Feeling full very quickly, even after a small meal
- A lasting change in your bowel habits
Small Changes That Can Help
Slowing down at meals, staying hydrated, and taking a short walk after eating can all make a noticeable difference. If you’re adding more fiber to your diet, do it gradually. Our Bloating 101 guide has more tips if you want to dig deeper.
Gut-Friendly Recipe: Pumpkin Yogurt Parfait Cups
What if your favorite fall flavor could be dessert and breakfast? 🎃
These layered cups bring together creamy yogurt, warmly spiced pumpkin, and a little crunch. No oven, no fuss, and ready in about 30 minutes!
They’re just as at home on a Halloween party table as they are in your fridge for an easy grab-and-go breakfast.
Pumpkin is also a great source of fiber, which is one more reason to keep it on the menu all season!
Ingredients
- 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
- 1½ cups vanilla Greek yogurt
- 2–3 tbsp maple syrup or honey
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- ½ tsp cinnamon, plus extra for topping
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Granola and/or crushed graham crackers, for layering
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
- Stir together the pumpkin puree, maple syrup or honey, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and vanilla until smooth.
- In each cup, layer the yogurt, the pumpkin mixture, and the granola or graham crackers.
- Repeat the layers, then finish with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon.
- Chill for 15–30 minutes before serving.
A note for sensitive stomachs: Greek yogurt is naturally lower in lactose than regular yogurt, but lactose-free or plant-based yogurt is an easy swap if dairy gives you trouble. Maple syrup tends to be gentler than honey for some people. And if you’re not used to much fiber, a smaller portion is a good place to start.
Spooky (But Fun) Gut Facts 👻
In the spirit of the season, here are some strange-but-true facts about what’s happening inside you right now:
- Your gut has a mind of its own. It runs on a separate nervous system, made up of hundreds of millions of nerve cells.
- That swallowed gum isn’t haunting you for 7 years. Your body can’t fully break it down, but it passes through just like everything else.
- Your stomach is always giving itself a makeover. The cells lining it are replaced every few days to protect it from its own acid.
- You’re carrying about 20 feet of small intestine. It’s neatly coiled up inside your abdomen.
- You’ve got company. Trillions of microbes live in your gut, helping with digestion and supporting your immune system.
